Activities for UN World Wildlife Day: A Call for Conservation

Writer's picture: PlantzMatterPlantzMatter

World Wildlife Day is a time to celebrate and learn about the animals and plants that live in the wild. People celebrate it on the 3rd of March each year.

Why World Wildlife Day Is Important

The United Nations created this special day to help protect wildlife. It aims to ensure people do not harm them by trading or selling them in ways that could lead to extinction. The day hopes to increase protection for wild flora and fauna, particularly endangered species of wild fauna and flora. Wildlife Day reminds us why caring for nature and the animals around us is important.

World Wildlife Day Coloring Pages

In this post, you will find a series of coloring pages. The individual animal pages are some of our most endangered.

Here are some of the most endangered and recognizable animals that people are often familiar with:

  1. Amur Leopard: Known for its beautiful spotted coat, the Amur leopard is critically endangered.

  2. Black Rhino: Hunted for their horns, black rhinos are critically endangered. Conservation efforts have helped stabilise some populations.

  3. Mountain Gorilla: They are native to central Africa. They face threats from poaching and habitat destruction.

  4. Hawksbill Turtle: This sea turtle is critically endangered. It is due to illegal shell trade and the loss of coral reefs.

  5. Pangolin: The world's most trafficked mammal, pangolins are critically endangered. Their scales and meat are in high demand.

  6. Sumatran Orangutan: Deforestation and palm oil plantations have nearly extinct this species.

  7. Vaquita: A small porpoise from the Gulf of California, it is the most endangered marine mammal.

  8. Asian Elephant: Asian elephants are more numerous than African elephants. But, they face serious threats from habitat loss and poaching.

  9. Snow Leopard: This elusive big cat from Central Asia's mountains is threatened by poaching and a loss of prey.

  10. Blue Whale: Despite being the largest animal on Earth, blue whales are endangered due to past whaling and ongoing ship strikes.

Where Wildlife Day Comes From

How CITES Helped Protect Wildlife

World Wildlife Day honours an agreement called CITES. This agreement protects endangered animals and plants. It ensures trade does not harm them. They created it to stop animals and plants from disappearing forever. This helps keep ecosystems healthy and supports people who rely on wildlife for their jobs and communities.

The Role of the United Nations

The United Nations decided to create Wildlife Day to help protect animals and plants everywhere. This decision is part of a larger goal to protect nature and ensure people live in harmony with wildlife. The United Nations encourages everyone to help protect nature and wildlife.

The Value of Wildlife

Wild animals and plants are very important for keeping nature healthy. They help ecosystems stay balanced and provide things we need like clean air and water. Wildlife Day reminds us how important animals and plants are for the people and planet.

New Ways to Protect Wildlife

Using Technology to Help Animals

New technology is helping protect animals and plants. People use tools to track and monitor wildlife, which helps keep them safe. These digital tools make conservation efforts more effective and successful.

An example of a company that uses technology to track animals is Fahlo. They partner with conservation organisations and make bracelets that people can buy. Part of their profits go towards wildlife conservation. To see an example you can read my Fahlo sea turtle review.

Wildlife Day Themes

Bringing People and Nature Together

One of the main ideas of Wildlife Day is to show how people and nature can live together peacefully. By learning more about wildlife and how we affect it, we can help protect animals and plants for future generations.

Perhaps you would like to research one of the animals on the list?

Inspiring Young People to Get Involved

Each year, Jackson Wild and the United Nations hold a Youth Art Contest. This contest encourages kids and teens to show their love for wildlife through art. It helps inspire the next generation to care about conservation.

A Day to Celebrate: How You Can Help

Everyone can do something to celebrate Wildlife Day. You can join local events, help with wildlife conservation projects, or take part in online programs. By working together, people everywhere can protect animals and plants.

Getting involved could be as simple as having a conversation about how we can do small things to look after our planet.

Conclusion

World Wildlife Day highlights the importance of protecting animals and plants. Wildlife is vital for healthy ecosystems and for us. People of all ages can help raise awareness to protect nature for future generations.
